Re: Moral and National Education

There has been some enquiries from old boys about the School's position on the Moral and National Education. After communicating with the School, CSKOBA has learned that the following is the School's position regarding the subject, and CSKOBA would like to give its support to School's position:

"Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College is NOT going to implement the Moral & National Education Curriculum

To act in line with the Catholic Church and La Salle Brothers thinking, Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College is NOT going to implement the 'Moral and National Education' curriculum. In the meantime, the School will continue to teach Religious Studies, Moral & Civic Education as usual."

Old boys are encouraged to divert their enquiry to info@cskoba.org.

Thank You for your Donation
12 June 2012
Dear CSK Old Boys,

I would, as President of the CSK (La Salle) College Old Boys' Association (CSKOBA), join with Mr. Toby Chow, the Chairman of the CSK (La Salle) College Old Boys' Foundation (CSKOBF), like to express my heartfelt thank you for the generous donation made by our Old Boys in support of the "Bamboo School Project" education program run by Lasallian Brother Victor Gil Munoz in northern Thailand. Our message of appeal has traveled far even to Spring Hill, Florida in the U.S. where one of our CSK Old Boys – Mr. Johnny Waing Kwan, graduated in 1970 responded generously.

Although this donation project has drawn to a close, your continuous support to your Alma Mater is highly appreciated. Both the CSKOBA and the CSKOBF have from time to time made donations to our School in support of improving our students' welfare and well being, whether academically or to further enhance their extra-curricular activities.

If you are interested to show your continuous support to our work, please make your contribution payable to "CHAN SUI KI (LA SALLE) COLLEGE OLD BOYS' FOUNDATION LIMITED", together with your name, year of CSK Form 5 graduation, address and contact telephone numbers (for issue of receipt to charitable donation tax deduction purpose). The cheque can also be handed in to any committee members of the CSKOBA or CSKOBF, or send to the our correspondence address: Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College Old Boys' Association Ltd., 4 Sheung Wo Street, Homantin, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Please state – "Donation to the CSKOBF".

I would like to thank you in advance for your support and wishing all CSK alumni around the world good luck and good health!

Yours faithfully,

Ronny Tang
President
Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College Old Boys' Association Ltd.

Appeal for Donation to the Thailand Bamboo School Project
8 May 2012
Dear CSK Old Boys,

I am Ronny Tang, Chairman of CSK (La Salle) College Old Boys' Association (CSKOBA). I write to you, together as a joint project with Mr. Toby Chow, the Chairman of the CSK (La Salle) College Old Boys' Foundation (CSKOBF), to call for your donation in support of an education program run by Lasallian Brother Victor Gil Munoz in northern Thailand.

In last October, a group of Hong Kong delegates from various HK Lasallian alumni associations attended the Fifth World Union of Lasallian Former Students (UMAEL) General Assembly held in Manila. In the assembly, over 200 Lasallian alumni representatives from around the world and dozens of Lasallian brothers attended different seminars and sharing sessions. We learned a lot more on the education and assistance programs by the Lasallian brothers in the region. Br. Victor who personally runs the Bamboo School project in northern Thailand introduced one of the sharing sessions.

Br. Victor sent us an email a few weeks ago, proposed a fund‐raising program for the Bamboo School to acquire a new school bus to cater for the growing number of students. The school bus costs about HK$ 360,000 and Br. Victor hopes that Lasallian alumni from Hong Kong and Japan can work together to accomplish this fund‐raising goal. (Please refer to the information at the end).

Saint John Baptist de La Salle regarded the mission of teaching as one of the most holy and exalted on earth. Teachers are to be "ambassadors and ministers of Jesus Christ", the "guardian angels", of their pupils and act like "good shepherds" toward their flock.

For hundreds of years, Lasallian brothers all over the world providing quality teaching and serving communities in need. In the border areas of northern Thailand with Myanmar, due to poor economic conditions and for various reasons, many children are either out of school or being abandoned. Despite of the hardship conditions, Br Victor went there to take charge of the Bamboo School project, he knew that there are so many children in need of help.

I know that HK$180,000 is not an easy goal, but charity has no frontier. If we consider this as an international cooperation program, and try to extend our vision a little bit further, I am confident that with the support of the Lasallian alumni in Hong Kong, this target is accomplishable.

Lasallian brothers have been serving in Hong Kong for nearly one and a half century. You and I are the lucky ones to have had the chance to be educated and blessed by Lasallian brothers. Br. Victor is just like those Lasallian brothers that we had met in our campus, fully dedicate their life to education in the name of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. If you do appreciate the contribution from Br. Victor and other Lasallian brothers, please donate generously. Show them we are in unity and they have all the support from the Lasallian alumni in Hong Kong.

Br. Patrick Tierney, Sector Leader of Lasallian Schools in Hong Kong is in full support of this fund‐raising program and agreed to make his share of donation.

If you are interested to take part in this donation appeal, please send in a cheque payable to "CHAN SUI KI (LA SALLE) COLLEGE OLD BOYS' FOUNDATION LIMITED" on or before 31 May 2012, together with your name, year of CSK Form 5 graduation, address and contact telephone numbers (for issue of receipt to charitable donation tax deduction purpose). Please state – "BAMBOO SCHOOL PROJECT".

The money collected will then be transferred to the said Bamboo School project via Hong Kong Lasallian Mission Fund.

I would like to thank you in advance for your support in this fund‐raising program, and wishing all Lasallian alumni in Hong Kong good luck, good health and a happy life!

Yours faithfully,

Ronny Tang
President
Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College Old Boys' Association Ltd.

Remarks: UMAEL (Union Mondiale des Anciens Eleves Lasalliens or World Union of Lasallian Former Students) is the international association of all Lasallian Alumni Associations and Federations around the world. Every four years, UMAEL hosts a World Congress where all the associations and ederations of Lasallian former students worldwide meet to discuss the way forward for the Lasallian Alumni. The 5th UMAEL World Congress was held from October 26 to 30, 2011. De La Salle Philippines was the host of this momentous event. This is the first time in UMAEL history that the Congress comes to Asia.

For your reference (information from Br. Victor):

Need of a vehicle for transport of students

The Bamboo School is located about 400 meters from the Myanmar border with Thailand on public land controlled by the Thai Army. That site is very convenient for the students of the area to come to school and to the parents to send their children to school. However the Thai military are worried about the national security because of the nearness to the border with Myanmar and the Karen State. Thai military allow us to stay there as long as there is nothing built permanently. But this is not suitable for a long term commitment to the children of the area.

The La Salle Foundation of Thailand have decided to commit themselves to permanent structure and have the school eventually recognized by the Thai Government, which is not possible in the present site so near the Burmese border. Therefore the La Salle Foundation of Thailand has bought a piece of land situated 15 km inside Thailand. This site is called Parmenie in honor of a famous mountain in the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. We have already 84 students traveling from the Bamboo site to the Parmenie site every day. Next school year there will be about 170 students doing this journey.

At the present time the Bamboo School has 2 vehicles to transport 84 students from the Myanmar border to the Parmenie campus of the Bamboo School, about 15 kilometers inside Thailand. The two vehicles are overcrowded. Beside, next school year (starting May 2012) the number of students to be transported will increase to about 170.

What we are looking for:
We need one six-wheeled lorry, about 5.5 meters long. Seats and a roof will be added. This type of vehicle is widely used in this area. Other schools in the area have similar systems of transport. Since it is to be used for a many years we prefer to buy a new lorry rather than a second hand one. The price a new vehicle is about 1,400,000 ( one million four hundred thousand )baht i.e. about US$ 46,000 (forty six thousand).

Since it is a substantial amount we would like to propose this project to the Hong Kong alumni and the Japanese alumni each contributing half of the expenses (i.e. each US $23,000.00)

Person presenting the project: Brother Victor Gil Munoz.

Br. Victor is Spanish Brother who has been working as missionary in Thailand since 1964. He has held different responsibilities in different La Salle Brothers' schools in Thailand, and since 2008 has been working in the Bamboo School project.

I hope you be generous in supporting this worthy project.

President Report 2011-2012
30th April 2012
As in previous years, a new group of executive committee members were elected at the annual general meeting held on 25 June 2011 for the term of 2011/2012. I am honored to be elected as the President of our Association for the second consecutive term. Together with my fellow committee members, we endeavor to contribute our best effort to serve all the CSKOBA members as well as to assist the School in its development for the benefit of our CSK boys.

CSKOBA has donated twelve scholarships to CSK students during the school year to commend their distinguished academic achievement. The prizes were presented during the Speech Day in November 2011. Besides, our Young Old Boys Mentorship Program hosted several talks and seminars for senior form students, advising on topics like Form 7 admission guidance and further education opportunities etc.

CSKOBA continues our long tradition to remain in close partnership with the CSK Parents-Teachers Association (PTA). Besides serving together in the School Management Committee to assist the School in formulating key policy and strategy, CSKOBA also served in the PTA committee to promote better cooperation and communication between the school management and the parents. CSKOBA and PTA joined with the School in organizing many events such as the New Comers' Day, Open Day for Primary Schools, and Career Talks by reputable old boys etc. On the social side, we co-organized the Christmas BBQ party last year, as well as the Spring Outing on 11 March, with over 160 parents, students, teachers and old boys took a fun day out in the New Territories.

The CSKOBA would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to the support PTA has given us in the past. We have been working closely that has now become a CSK tradition. I am confident that this tradition would continue to carry forward for the many years to come.

CSKOBA has also maintained close relationship with other Lasallian Schools in Hong Kong and participated in all Lasallian School Lunch Meetings held once in every quarter of the year. Alumni representatives, Brothers, and principals from the Lasallian Secondary Schools in Hong Kong attend the lunch meetings.

Our annual 2-Day golf tournament was held on 9 & 10 December 2011 in the Dongguan Hillview Golf Club and the Citic Changping Golf Club, PRC. Many of our old boy golfers have enjoyed this golfing event so much that they become regular participants every year. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Yuen Yung Hon, Dennis [1982], winner of the Brother Herman Cup (2-Day Gross Champion) and Mr. Tang Kwan Hui, Ronny [1979], winner of the Brother Eugene Cup (2-Day Net Champion), as well as other Day Champions and Runners-ups. The prizes were presented during our annual gathering held at the school hall on 25 February 2012.

This year's annual gathering has around 280 old boys, parents, current and retired teachers took part with "Pun-choi" being served at the School Hall. The hall was filled with alumni from the 60s' to the new millennium. The atmosphere was filled with joy and laughter and everyone was enjoying the evening out.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to our committee for the time and effort they have contributed to the Association. CSK has come to where it is today because of men like you – alumni who have carried the CSK spirit into the world. On behalf of all of us at CSK, thank you for helping to bring us here, which will ensure CSK's continued vitality and success in the years ahead. More importantly, your full support and participation in the Association's events and functions is highly appreciated and look forward to seeing you again in the coming year.

Under Clause 23(a) of the Articles of Association, one-half of the Committee who has been longest in office since last election shall retire from office and shall be eligible for re-election.

The group dined their lunch at nearby Kat O village with very fresh and sumptuous seafood. Many of them brought back dried seafood products and locally-produced desserts.

2007 CSKOBA Winter Country Outing
What a great day out in the countryside with a strong “240” participants from the OBA, principals & staff, PTA and students, together with family members and friends.

Early Sunday morning on 21st January, 4 full coaches, labeled “CSKOBA Outing”, carried passengers loaded with fun and joy heading towards the Tuen Mun Reptile House. After a delicious and satisfying lunch in a local restaurant in Lau Fou Shan, the group flocked to the Hong Kong Wetland Park in Yuen Long. This obviously was the climax of the day when all members were eagerly queuing up to try to get a glimpse of “Pui Pui” - the legendary crocodile girl of Hong Kong.

Since the vacancy on this fabulous event was filled up soon before the prescribed deadline, OBA would sincerely apologize to those belated entrants. Your continual support to the OBA functions would be highly appreciated.

This year our dinner was one of the most entertaining and remarkable OBA dinners in recent years as it had music performance, prize lottery, fund-raising auction and the highlight of the night: the long distance tele-conference with ex-teacher, Mr. Liu Hin Shu, now living in Toronto and Mr Harvey Tai, co-ordinator of CSK Overseas Old Boys Network, now living in California. The evening was ended in high note as everyone vowed to come back next year.
